Father Wilson is a selfless and inspiring man. And at 90 years of age, he still guides the community toward education, growth and spirituality. This work is a portrait of an exceptional man and his legacy. For almost 50 years Father Wilson and Noelle Ryan have welcomed the community into this safe haven that sits within a neighbourhood that’s experienced political and economic struggle.
In this body of work, I have explored the area of Ballymurphy and decided to focus on one particular resident in this neighbourhood. Father Desmond Wilson lives in the Springhill area of Ballymurphy, his home is also known as the Springhill Community House which was established in the 1970s.
From the outset of entering the Community House, you feel instantly welcomed and at home in the surroundings. As well as the feeling of Father Wilson’s undeniable presence which makes the Community House what it is today.
